Reflections After Reading the Gospel of Luke


Key verse: "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." (19:10)


Reflections: The Lord Jesus came as the perfect Man, fulfilling God's will in the identity of the Son of Man. His main characteristics as a man is as follows:


(1) Mindful of the Fathers' business

  1. He went up to the temple in Jerusalem at the age of twelve.

  2. Sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions

  3. He replied to His parents, "I must be about My Father’s business."


(2) Obeyed the Law

  1. He was circumcised at the eighth day. (2:21)

  2. He was presented to God after purification was completed. (2:22-23)

  3. His parents offered a sacrifice. (2:24)

  4. He went up to Jerusalem at twelve according to the custom. (2:42-43)

  5. He obeyed the law for 33 and a half year.

  6. He completed the law on the cross.

  7. When the centurion see what happened, he said, "Certainly, this was a righteous man." (23:47)


(3) Fulfilled the duties of the Son of Man

  1. He departed from the temple and went back to Nazareth with His parents. (2:51)

  2. He honored His parents. (2:51)

  3. Fulfilled the duties of the Son of Man in His family for 33 years. (3:23)


(4) Lived a prayer life

  1. He prayed eight times.

    a. After being baptized (3:21)

    b. Withdrew into the wilderness. (5:16)

    c. Before He appointed the twelve disciples. (6:12)

    d. Transfiguration on the mountain. (9:19)

    e. Prayed in a certain place (11:1)

    f. In the garden of Gethsemane (22:39-46)

    g. Commit His spirit in the hands of the Father on the cross (23:46)

  2. Three times He taught the disciples to pray.

a. Teach the disciples to pray. (11:2-4)

b. A fervent prayer (11:5-13)

c. Always aught to pray (18:1-8)


(5) He was a model role (lead by example)

  1. First He provided a model of a prayerful life, then He taught His disciples to pray.

  2. He received the Holy Spirit first, then He taught people to receive the Holy Spirit (4:1; 11:13).

  3. He obeyed the Law first, then He taught people to obey it.


(6) He seek the lost (a sinner's friend)

  1. He told a parable about seeking the lost. (chapter 15).

  2. Call Levi the tax collector, and dine with sinners and tax collectors (5:27-32).

  3. Allow the sinful woman to anoint Him with oil (7:36–38).

  4. He praised the tax collector for his humble prayer (18:9-16)

  5. Zacchaeus was saved (19:1-10)


(7) He did not despise the poor

  1. The angels brought good news to the shepherds (2:8-14).

  2. His parents offered turtledoves and pigeons. (2:24).

  3. He preached the gospel to the poor (4:18).

  4. Lazarus, the beggar entered paradise. (16:19-31)

  5. Praise the poor widow for offering two mites. (21:1-4)
